โฆ Synopsis
This paper reports for the first time the fab~cat~on of Carbon/~ar~n composites by the d.c. plasma decomposition of methane. An estimate of the in~itration rate as a function of deposition time is given by the ratio of the mass of the sample to the initial mass of the starting material (PAN fibers). The texture and the microstructure of the samples are observed by scanning electron and optical polarizing microscopy, respectively. The density is evaluated by pycnometric measurements.
Results comparable to those obtained for samples made by the chemical vapor deposition technique are achieved for a lower substrate temoerature (85O'C instead of 1000ยฐC) and a reduced gas flow rate (3 l/h instead of 30 l/h).

Two-dimensional carbon/carbon composites were densified with carbon by pyrolysis of propane using the pulse chemical vapor infiltration (CVI) process which repeats the cycle of evacuation and introduction of gas. The experimental parameters were deposition temperature, reactant gas concentration, fl
