Background. The most common neoplasm of the parotid gland is the pleomorphic adenoma. The familial occurrence of such tumors arising within the parotid gland is rare, with only 3 previous reports in the literature. Bilateral synchronous pleomorphic adenomas of the parotid gland are also uncommon. We

โฆ Synopsis
The operative procedure that has proven to be effective in treating tumors of the superficial lobe of the parotid gland, independent of the tumor size, is superficial parotidectomy. The recurrence rate in the most common diseases (mixed tumors of the parotid) is about 0.5-30%, or sometimes as high as 57%, and the complication rate, including that of paresis of the facial nerve, is 5-20% [1-3].
We suggest "extracapsular" excision instead of superficial parotidectomy for the treatment of benign tumors of the superficial lobe of the parotid gland that are less than 2.5 cm in diameter.
Using this technique, we had no case of permanent facial paresis, very low percentage of Fry syndrome, and in a median follow-up of 18 years (range 6-26 years), no recurrence for primary tumors of the parotid.
