For a broadband backward-pumped distributed fiber Raman amplifier (B-DFRA) operated in long-haul transmission system with massive signal channels, not only the average level but also the tilt of the output power spectrum will vary due to the variation of signal-to-signal Raman scattering. So, when t

Abstract
Gain, gain saturation, optical signal‐to‐noise ratio (OSNR), and pump power conversion efficiency (PCE) of co‐ and counter‐pumped Raman fiber amplifiers (RFAs) are investigated and compared experimentally in this paper. Results show that obvious OSNR improvement can be achieved with co‐pumped RFAs. Compared with the counter‐pumped scheme, the co‐pumped solution has more severe gain saturation. PCE decreases as the input power increases for both pumping schemes, however, PCE decreases faster for the co‐pumped RFAs. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. ## Abstract The impact of employing a hybrid Raman/Erbium‐doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) in a transmission system is demonstrated by considering the optical signal‐to‐noise ratio (OSNR) performance. The gain flatness of hybrid Raman/EDFA is maintained below 1.2 dB from 1530 to 1565 nm through careful
