lhe combined effects of upconversion and pump excited state absorption losses on the gain from co-and contmdirectwnallypumped erbium-doped fiber amplifiers have been studied qerimentully and simulated numerically. Our results indicate that for all fiber lengths, contradirectional gain

is higher than codirectional gain at low pump powers, and codirecthnal gain becomes higher than contradirectional gain at higher pump powers.
