We have confirmed the diuretic properties attributed to three endemic spedes from the Canary Islands. The plants chosen were Astyakmia rcltiflia (L.f.), Forsskaolea angusrifolia (Retz) and Ceterach aureum (Cav.) Buch. and Paronychia canariensis. The results confirm a diuretic activity probably due t

✦ Synopsis
A pharmacological evaluation for diuretic activity of the ethanol extract of Alternanthera pungens was carried out. Urinary excretion of water, pH, density and sodium concentration were investigated in isotonic saline loaded rats. The extract showed an effective diuretic activity, in comparison with furosemide, increasing significantly the renal loss of sodium. These results indicate that this plant has a diuretic behaviour similar to furosemide, a highceiling diuretic agent

The inhibitory action of Hamelia patens methanol extract was studied in vitro on uterus, ileum and duodenum, and the antidiarrhoeal activity was evaluated in vivo on mice and rats. It was found that for the uterus and intestine the inhibitory response was dose dependent and the major antidiarrhoeal
Hydroalcohol extracts of Foeniculum vulgare var dulce (D.C) root were tested for their diuretic activity in rats. Pharmacological evaluation revealed that they led to an increase in urine flow and urinary sodium excretion in rats. Dose effect relations were also assessed.
