The objective of this paper is to present a new method of measuring oxygen diffusion coefficients with membrane-covered polarographic oxygen electrodes and to assess its applicability to viscous polymeric solutions of sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), dextran and polyethylene glycol (PEG). ✦ Synopsis
AMtract--The study of diffusion in a polymeric system often poses difficult experimental problems, notably when a rate of release is determined in a liquid receptor phase which can interact with the system. In this publication, we propose an accurate method to determine the diffusion coef~cient by measurement of the displacement of the solubility front during the diffusion within the system alone. The theoretical model, developed in the first part, shows that the rate of this displacement is a function of ,,~. According to the knowledge of the solubility of the diffusing molecule in the system, two types of interpretation of these kinetics are presented. For illustration, two experimental studies are given in the second part.
