Essential oils were obtained by hydrodistillation of leaves, inflorescences and fruits of Vitex ugnus-castus L. (Verbenaceae). Yields ranged from 0.8 to 1.8% on dry weight basis. Eighty-five compounds were identified by GC-MS. The ratio of hydrocarbon : oxygen-containing components was nearly 1:l. 1

The essential oils of fresh leaves, ¯owers and fruits of Vitex agnus-castus L., growing in north Brazil, were obtained by hydrodistillation and their volatile constituents were identi®ed by GC±MS. The most abundant constituents found were 1,8-cineole, (E)-b-farnesene, sabinene, a-pinene, a-terpenyl
