β¦ Synopsis
We provide an estimate of the energy of the bottom of the conduction band in golid Ne and consider the implications of this result for electron localization ia liquid Ne. The energy, Vo , of the quasi-free electron state [l] in the bottom of the conduction band and of a non-polar dense fluid or a simple molecular crystal, is pertinent for the elucidation of the electronic properties of (ordered or disordered) insulators, for the understanding of electron localization in simple dense fluids, and of ionizatioa processes in a dense me&m. Experimental data for y. were recently obtained for liquid He, Ar ana Xr and for solid Ar, Kr and Xe by adiabatic electron injection ,into liquid He [2] and Ar [3] and from spectroscopic information concerning Wannier impurity 14-71 and X-ray exciton states [8] in the liquids and in *-he solids.
