β¦ Synopsis
Abstract
Negative and positive charging of ionic monocrystals (KCl, NaCl, Al~2~O~3~, MgO, SiO~2~ and LiH) under lowβenergy electron irradiation is investigated by AES and mass spectrometry. Secondary emission and electronβstimulated desorption negative ions of LiH data are presented. The mass spectra of sputtered neutrals postβionized into negative ions, and their ionization coefficients on the auxiliary target with a low work function, are presented. A phenomenological model of charging of dielectrics that depends on defect formation and secondary emission properties under lowβenergy electron irradiation is presented.

Based on a more realistic description of the in-depth secondary electron generation than that of standard (constant loss) model, a new model for the e-induced secondary electron emission yield, d = f(E 0 ), is applied to account for the observed mean atomic number dependence of the reduced yield cur
