✦ Synopsis

The conditions for electrolytic reduction of dilute nitric acid without the formation of ammonia, and without the addition of foreign substances, have been investigated. Dilute nitric acid is reduced at a graphite electrode at controlled potentials, nitrogen dioxide and carbon dioxide being the main products. A mechanism for this reduction is suggested.

Avec un potentiel control6 et avec une cathode de graphite les produits forrnes sont surtout le bioxyde d'azote et le bioxyde de carbone. Un m6canisme de cette reduction a et& suggere.

BACKGROUND: Because of its high cost, nitric acid has not been widely employed as the catalyst for hydrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass to obtain fermentable sugars. However, recently more and more research results have reported that nitric acid was more effective than other acids for the hydrolysi
