The co‐complexed Ba^2+^ cation in the hetero‐dinuclear complex 1 stabilizes the carbon‐nickel bond that is formed in the reductive coupling of benzyl chloride and 1; the “PhCH~2~Ni^II^/Ba^2+^” intermediate reacts with CO~2~ or acetic anhydride.
