## Abstract The coβcomplexed Ba^2+^ cation in the heteroβdinuclear complex 1 stabilizes the carbonβnickel bond that is formed in the reductive coupling of benzyl chloride and 1; the βPhCH~2~ο£ΏNi^II^/Ba^2+^β intermediate reacts with CO~2~ or acetic anhydride.
