These animals and unhantlled controls were injected on day 11 with a radioactive1~-labeled precursor of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and killed eithcr 6 hr, 3 or 30 days later. I n a subsequcnt experiment, uninjccted rats were likewise permitted to survive until 11, 14, 41, or 101 d a y of age. Brain weight tneasurcnicnts were taken in all aniinals, and the brains from the rats of the first experinic'nt prepared for histology and autoradiography, and cvaluated quantitatively.

Previous observations have demonstrated decreased in vivo and in vitro protein synthesis by brain ribosomal systems following long-term ethanol ingestion. For further investigation of the properties of brain ribosomes, the 40s and 60s ribosomal subunits were successfully isolated from control and ch

## Abstract Glutathione is a major regulator of the redox equilibrium, so its deficit weakens tissue resistance to oxidants. The nervous system is particularly susceptible to oxidative insults and is therefore very dependent on its glutathione content, especially during development, when brain meta
