## Abstract We have compared the in vitro development of 8.5โ€day early somitic mouse embryos cultured in static organ culture dishes in human cord serum or rat serum with the development of embryos of the same age cultured in rotating tubes or developing in vivo. ## Abstract Mouse blastocysts cultured in vitro in rat serum develop through the early somitic stages of embryogenesis at the same rate as embryos cultured in human cord serum. Rat serum can thus be used instead of human cord serum for in vitro culturing of mouse embryos.

Mouse embryos of many strains are blocked in development at the two-cell stage when placed in culture at the one-cell stage. If, however, they are placed in culture at the two-cell stage, they develop to blastocysts at a high rate. We investigated the transcriptional and translational systems in blo

## Abstract The optimal oxygen tension for development of preimplantation mouse embryos to the blastocyst stage in vitro was found to be between 2.5% and 5%. Oneโ€ and twoโ€cell embryos had a more sharply defined range of oxygen tension capable of supporting development than 8โ€cell and morula stages.
