✦ Synopsis

Abstract

The retention times of 24 alkanes, 11 olefins, 17 alkyl alcohols, 30 fatty acid methyl esters, and 8 polyaromatic hydrocarbons were measured on two non‐polar and two polar capillary columns at different temperatures. The enthalpy of these compounds was calculated from the Van't Hoff plot.

The log kβ€²s and enthalpies of each group of compounds showed individual linear relations. The relation of the enthalpy and Van der Waals volume was similar to that of log kβ€² and Van der Waals volume, and differed from that of their log kβ€² and boiling point. Enthalpy thus indicates selectivity of columns.

## Abstract In capillary gas‐solid chromatography where interactions between solute and carrier gas and adsorption of the solute on the surface of the adsorbent are considered to be imperfect, it has been shown that chromatographic retention is determined largely by adsorption processes. Molar solvation enthalpy (deltasol H(o)298) and molar heat capacity changes (deltasol C(o)p) were determined by gas chromatography for the C6-C12 n-alkanes on four preferred stationary phases (100% polydimethyl siloxane, 50% diphenyl-50% dimethyl polysiloxane, 50% trifluoropropyl methylsiloxane, and
