Human intestinal mucins are high molecular weight glycoproteins which protect and lubricate the epithelium of the gastrointestinal tract. In cases of malignant disease, mucins are abnormally expressed, overproduced or underglycosylated. This feature may enable the mucins to serve as tumour markers.
