โฆ Synopsis
joined Columbia in 1988, having obtained her B.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees at the University of Sofia in her native Bulgaria. She has over 30 years of experience in stereochemistry and circular dichroism and for the last 11 years has had a particularly fruitful collaboration with Professor Koji Nakanishi. This has enabled her to: (i) develop a number of new chromophores for micro-scale determination of the absolute chirality of a wide variety of substrates; (ii) establish the principle of pairwise chromophoric additivity in CD, a fundamental finding for interpreting complex CD spectra; (iii) investigate the interaction between bioactive ligands and their protein receptors, e.g. rapamycin and rhodopsin; (iv) develop a general method for determining the configuration of sphingosines; (v) introduce the porphyrins in exciton-coupled CD; and (vi) show the superb sensitivity of fluorescence-detected exciton chirality.
With Nakanishi and Woodward, she is co-author and co-editor of "Circular Dichroism: Interpretation and Applications" (VCH Press, 1994) and a very frequently invited plenary lecturer at international symposia. Her knowledge and experience will enable her to contribute to the further development of Chirality and we welcome her as North American Editor.
