✦ Synopsis

The dynamics of vibrational wave packets in the weakly predissnciated C 'll" of Cs, have been examined by two color, femtosecond laser pump-probe techniques. The motion of the wave packet is detected by photoionizing the dimer with a time-delayed 620 nm pulse and monitoring the time-and energy-integrated photoelectron signal with a proportional counter. Since the anharmonlcity of Css(C 'II") is slight (w&&%700) and the ground state vibrational manifold is equilibrated at Ta550 K, wave packets consisting of the superposition of wavefunctions of more than 20 vibrational levels are formed that dcphase in z 18 ps.

The vibrational wave packet dynamics of a heteronuclear diatomic alkali molecule in an excited state, the A I ~ + state of gaseous NaK, has been measured for the first time. At hpump = 790 nm, a wave packet oscillation period of 442 fs and dephasing within 10 ps has been observed. This dynamics has

The Born-Oppenheimer energies have been computed for the C al-Iu state of H 2 by the variational method in the interval 0.8 ~< R ~< 12 a o and the electronic transition moments for the Werner band determined. It is shown that there are some advantages to determining ground state population distributions of H2 by 1 + 1 REMPI using the C 'II, (u' ~0) state as the intermediate state. The state distribution can be deduced more directly from the ion signal, in addition, a much improved sensitivity of < I .7x
