✦ Synopsis

The relationship between solventogenesis, heat shock, and DNA topology in Clostridium acetobutylicum was investigated by inhibiting DNA gyrase in vivo by high concentrations of novobiocin. Primer extension and Northern blot analyses revealed that expression of genes required for solventogenesis and heat shock response was induced in the presence of this drug, whereas the transcription rate of acidogenic genes decreased, suggesting a role for DNA supercoiling as a signal for onset of solventogenesis.

The mechanism of anaerobic regulation of synthesis of colicins E1, E2, E3, K and D was studied. It was found that anaerobiosis significantly increases expression of the genes for colicins E1, E2, E3, K, and D. Experiments with novobiocin (a DNA gyrase inhibitor) showed that colicin synthesis in mini

We have determined the sequence of the lamB gene from Klebsiella pneumoniae. It encodes the precursor to the LamB protein, a 429 amino acid polypeptide with maltoporin function. Comparison with the Escherichia coli LamB protein reveals a high degree of homology, with 325 residues strictly identical.

In sheep as in man and most other mammals, there are two a-globin genes (Ia and II(z), which are expressed at different levels, the upstream gene being the most efficient. In a-globin gene triplication and quadruplication, this trend is confirmed, i.e., the cz-chain output of the downstream genes pr
