✦ Synopsis
This paper is an important contribution to our knowledge of the composition of the product that the authors call alkali-silica gel and others have called alkali-silica complex (1). This discussion is an effort to focus the attention on the chemistry involved in the alkali-silica reaction process that produces this alkali-silica gel from siliceous aggregates. It seems established (2,3,4) that the initial reaction in this process is the reaction of solid units of SiO 2 with ions from the pore fluid to produce solid alkali silicates, such as Na2SiO3.9H20. This enlarges the aggregate particle and this enlargement may cause cracks to form in the hardened cement paste.

The authors quote us (I) as saying the fume we examined was an effective pozzolan; they then suggest on the basis of their x-ray diffraction results that the presence or absence of calcium hydroxide in their mixtures showed the fumes they examined to have low pozzolanic activity.
Drs Kobayashi and Uno have obtained some very useful results in showing, through accelerated carbonation and exposure tests, that the rate of carbonation of concrete is higher, the greater the alkali content of the cement (1). Such results should not be considered as surprising when the reaction mec
