Some factors which affect the production of rotationally selected ions by photoionization of molecules in high-n, low-1 Rydberg states are discussed. Methods for attaining nearly pure rotational populations arc described.

The lowest Rydberg transition of ethylene was experimentally observed in a krypton matrix. These results combined with previous data on benzene and acetylene provide conclusive evidence that molecular Rydberg states are amenable to experimental observation in a dense medium.
