✦ Synopsis

The title compound, [CuCl 2 (C 12

was obtained by the reaction of 1,10-phenanthroline-5,6-dione (phendione) and CuCl 2 Á2H 2 O. The copper(II) ion is pentacoordinated in a distorted squarepyramidal environment. The water molecule connects the complex and a dimethyl sulfoxide solvent molecule by O-HÁ Á ÁO and O-HÁ Á ÁCl hydrogen bonds.
