In the crystal structure of the title compound, [Cu(C 11 H 9 -NO 5 )(H 2 O) 2 ]Á2H 2 O, in which N-(3-carboxy-2-hydroxybenzylidene)alaninate (H 3 ALS) is the Schiff base synthesized from l-alanine with 3-carboxysalicylaldehyde, the copper(II) ion is pentacoordinated in a square-pyramidal geometry, with the HALS 2À dianion acting as a tridentate ONO-chelator in a plane, and two water molecules occupying the apical site and the remaining basal site.
