✦ Synopsis
The reaction of 3,5-diaminobenzoic acid, 1,10-phenanthroline, NaN 3 and Zn II in basic aqueous solution gave rise to the title compound,
The Zn II atom is six-coordinate with a distorted octahedral geometry. The two aqua ligands are in cis positions and the 3,5-diaminobenzoate ligand binds to the central Zn atom through one of its amino groups.

The two independent molecules of the title compound, [Ba(C~7~H~5~O~3~)~2~(C~12~H~8~N~2~)~2~(H~2~O)~2~], are disposed about a pseudo-inversion centre. The Ba atom is eight-coordinate in a square-antiprismatic geometry in both molecules.
The title compound, [Zn(C 7 H 3 NO 4 )(C 12 H 8 N 2 )(H 2 O)]ÁH 2 O, is isostructural with the manganese(II) analogue. The Zn atom is coordinated by a tridentate dipicolinate dianion, a bidentate 1,10-phenanthroline molecule and a water molecule, resulting in a substantially distorted ZnO 3 N 3 octa
