โฆ Synopsis
The adiabatic ionization energies and COOH' appearance energies for a series of carboxylic acids have been measured by dissociative photoionization mass spectrometry. Using the stationary electron convention, a heat of formation of 143.5 f 0.7 kcal mol-' (1 kcal = 4.184 kJ) at 298 K is derived for the carboxyl cation in the gas phase, which corresponds to an absolute proton afiinity for carbon dioxide of 128.1 f 0.7 kcal mol-I.

Peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) is a fragile, highly reactive molecule which has proven difficult to characterize by mass spectrometry. This study investigates the use of a membrane introduction system to sample PAN and demonstrates that the molecular ions [MH] , [MH] ร and M ร \* can be generated under
The use in Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance (FTICR) mass spectrometry of the collision-induced dissociation of proton-bound dimers, the kinetic method or Cooks's method, is tested. This method is compared with the proton-transfer equilibrium method. Good agreement between the two methods is
