β¦ Synopsis
Snnple enzyme unmunoaasays are desclrbed which enable clenbuterol to be determmed m bovme hver homogenate and eye (aqueous humour and chorold/plgmented retmal eptthehum) by drrect anaiysls, and 111 urme followmg sobd-phase extra&on and concentration The sensltnMy, analytxal recovery and lmeanty of response of the assays proved appropnate to the determmatlon of clenbuterol m cattle seven days after cessation of a programme of treatment (0 8 pg cienbuterol per kg bodywelght, twice. dnly for four days) Concentrations determmed m bver (range < 0 25 ng g-' to 0 35 ng g-l) were approxunately ten times higher than m urme (range 0 015-O 030 ng ml-') Although clenbuteroi could not be detected m aqueous humour, the chorold/plgmented retmal eplthehum contained concentrations rangmg between 12 and 14 ng g -' These prehmtnary fmdmgs clearly mduxte that chorold may be the tissue of choice to enable use or abuse of clenbuterol to be estabhshed followmg slaughter
