โœฆ Synopsis

of treatment is to be welcomed, sincc it indicates where simplification is possible and pavcs tho way to the generation of n common Iangungc.

The book is divided into three main sections dealing respectively with general thcrmodynnmics, physical therniodynamics, nnd chemical thcrmodynarnics. The general section devoted to fundniuantal principlcs is kept scrupulously frco from any cquations which apply only t o special systcm such as tho ideal gas, so that the gcucrality of these relations is cloarly brought out. The section on chemical thcrmodynnxnics occiipies over two thirds of the book, aud deals in considerable detail with the many important problems in this field. Although this section iucludcs much matorial which might seem to I)cloug to physical tbormodynamics, the manner in which it fits into the general schcme probably justifies the transference. A very important fcature of the book is a set of completely worked out csninples of the application of thcrniodynamics t o a mimber of divorsc physico-chcmical problcnis, clioscn so ns t o illustrntc tho more important mcthods dcvclopcd in the genoral taxt. l%ially, tho book is \vcll supplied with diagrams, ~i i d with rcfcrenccs to the original literature.
