A mutant strain of Candida sp. XF 217, was found to produce ethanol from D-xylose aerobically as weil as anaerobically. The rate of ethanol production under aerobic conditions was greater, indicating an oxygen requirement for the uptake of D-xylose in XF 217. Ethanol was also produced by XF 217 when
