## Abstract This chapter describes the key role of faculty in creating active, integrative learning experiences for students in basic skills learning communities, providing forums for students to extend time on task, and validating that students both belong and will be successful in college.
The productivity challenge is to restrain the cost of higher education to parents, students, institutions, and taxpayers. The learning productivity approach attempts to gain productivity less through reducing or cheapening inputs (that is, cutting faculty and staff, substituting less expensive part-
