More Research on the Relationship between Marriage and Earnings
Recent studies have demonstrated that there is a marriage penalty for women and the opposite effect for men. A new research paper from the Urban Institute examines the relationship between earnings and marriage and specifically the linkages between marriage, work commitment, and wage rates for men age 17-40 and demonstrates a positive relationship between marriage and wage rates for black and low-skill men. Unlike other studies of the marital wage premium for men, this paper examines how marital status and marital transitions affect hours worked as well as wage rates, taking account of the feedback effect on wage rates and earnings associated with marriage effects on hours worked.
