✦ Synopsis

The chz.rge transfer reaction Ar' (NO, Ar) NO+ iins studied in n crossed beam experiment at collision cnergics above and below 1 eV (c.m.). Two mechanisms could be distinguished, an cleclron eschange process, and XI intermediate complex for- mation; the latter involves modente momentum exchange between the collision partners and is increasingly more important at Icw colkion cncgies. Cistributions of product translational energies showed thnt both mechanisms give rise to NO* in the excited a 3 Z' state in a quasi-resor;ant process. NO' which originated via the complex mechanism was formed in Franck-Condon transitions in the ;I 3~* state and, at higher collision energy, also in the b 'I1 and w 3A states, in much less probable inelastic processes. These transitions are presumably obeyed because the NO bond distance is net perturbed during Ar' approach.
