โœฆ Synopsis

Crane International has introduced a guidebook of seal standards, interpretations and solutions called A Mechanical Seal Guide to API Standard 682, a guidebook of seal standards, interpretations and solutions backed by findings of a John Crane technical committee for customer use. The guidebook clarifies API's "stand alone" mechanical seal standard for current and retrofit equipment for centrifugal and rotary pumps used in petroleum refinery services.

Since API 682 affects about 90% of all refinery services, three basic seal types are recommended for nine basic refinery applications. The book details API's seal requirements, including configurations and material specifications. The book also offers well-defined steps for selecting an appropriate standardized seal type, arrangement and geometry. Designed to be consistent with API objectives, the book can be used as a companion publication to the first edition of the API Standard 682, Shaft Sealing Systems for Centrifugal and Rotary Pumps.

The first section of the guidebook, "Standard Seal Types and Arrangements" lays the groundwork for understanding API's main seal types and their possible arrangements within specified cartridge types.

The second section, "Seal Selection Procedures," provides clear instructions for identifying the correct seal for given criteria, and features step-by-step approaches, a detailed example, and easy-to-read diagrams showing precise procedure paths.

The third section, "Seal Design Information," dissects the seal and its components and describes the standard dimensions, thickness and materials specified to be used in each part.

The guidebook also outlines the John Crane products which satisfy API 682 standards, and describes the testing requirements the company meets in its technology testing facility.
