✦ Synopsis

Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto (B31, fl aB-mutant) shape conversion from a spirochetal silhouette into a sphere shown with scanning electron microscopy. The spirochete's shape conversion begins with a stretching of the membrane, followed by the folding of the spirochete cylinder inside the budding membrane. Finally, the transformed spirochete is globular, often with one end of the protoplasmatic cylinder protruding from the surface.
