โœฆ Synopsis

The leaf oils of Baeckea frutescens L., water-distilled from samples obtained from four dierent sites, were analysed by capillary GC and GCยฑMS. The oils were found to possess some compositional dierences and considerable variation in the levels of each component, suggesting the existence of chemical varieties. The oils were rich in pinenes (39.9ยฑ55.5%), with the exception of one sample which contained g-terpinene at 34.1% as the dominant component. 1,8-Cineole, which was present in appreciable amounts in three samples, was conspicuously absent in one sample. Other compounds that were found as the main components of most of the samples were p-cymene, limonene, linalol, a-terpineol, b-caryophyllene and a-humulene.

Essential oils were obtained by hydrodistillation of leaves, inflorescences and fruits of Vitex ugnus-castus L. (Verbenaceae). Yields ranged from 0.8 to 1.8% on dry weight basis. Eighty-five compounds were identified by GC-MS. The ratio of hydrocarbon : oxygen-containing components was nearly 1:l. 1

The essential oil from the rhizomes of Hedychium gardnerianum Roscoe (`Kahili ginger') contains about 30% of sesquiterpenes, mainly cadinane derivatives. The following new sesquiterpenes were identiยฎed by their NMR and MS data: a-corocalene epoxide (104); 1,10;7,10-bisepoxy-1,10-seco-calamenene (68)

The volatile constituents of Perovskia atriplicifolia Benth. (Lamiaceae), collected in Pakistan, have been characterized by means of GC, GCยฑMS and 13 C-NMR spectroscopy. Out of 19 compounds identiยฎed in this oil, the monoterpenes, D 3 -carene (22.3%) and 1,8-cineole (27.5%) amounted to 50% of the to
