The very pleasant ( ¯owery, hay-and tea-like, woody) smelling essential oil of the ¯owers of Aglaia odorata Lour. (Meliaceae) consists mainly of cadinane derivatives (ca. 48%, including 27% of d-cadinene, 24). A main constituent is muurola-4,10( 14)-dien-1b-ol (4%, 37), accompanied by the new epimer

✦ Synopsis
The essential oil composition of Cedrela odorata L. leaves was comprehensively investigated by means of capillary GC and GC±MS. Twenty-six constituents were identi®ed in the volatile oil. Sesquiterpenoids such as a-santalene (9.5%), b-acoradiene (7.1%), b-elemene (6.8%), caryophyllene oxide (6.0%) and Z-a-bergamotene (6.0%) were the dominant compounds. Minor constituents included isocaryophyllene, b-bisabolene, b-alaskene and amorpha-4, 11-diene. A rare sesquiterpenoid sulphur derivative, mintsulphide, was identi®ed for the ®rst time in C. odorata essential oil.

The leaf oils of Baeckea frutescens L., water-distilled from samples obtained from four dierent sites, were analysed by capillary GC and GC±MS. The oils were found to possess some compositional dierences and considerable variation in the levels of each component, suggesting the existence of chemical
The steam-distilled essential oil of Solidago virgaurea L. was investigated by GC, GC±MS and NMr spectroscopy. Sixty components were identi®ed. The main constituents are a-pinene, myrcene, b-pinene, limonene, sabinene and germacrene-D.
The composition of the essential oil isolated from the seeds of Aframomum melegueta (Roscoe) K. The essential oil from the rhizomes of Hedychium gardnerianum Roscoe (`Kahili ginger') contains about 30% of sesquiterpenes, mainly cadinane derivatives. The following new sesquiterpenes were identi®ed by their NMR and MS data: a-corocalene epoxide (104); 1,10;7,10-bisepoxy-1,10-seco-calamenene (68)
