The absorption and circular dichroism spectra of the 1:l copolymer (L-LYS, L-Tyr), have been investigated in aqueous solutions at pH ranging from 3 to 13. The spectral patterns indicate that the fully charged polyampholyte assumes a nonperiodic conformation on the acid and basic sides of the isoelec

✦ Synopsis
351 00 Padova, Ilaly synopsis Circular Dichroism measurements have been carried out on poly-L-lysine (PLL) and on random copolymers of lysine and phenylalanine a t various pH values and in the presence of different amounts of NaClOr. The results indicate that either the homopolymer or the copolymers a t pH conditions a t which the side-chain amino groups are fully protonated, assume the right-handed a-helical conformation in the presence of NaC1O4. The results are interpreted in terms of specific binding of C10,ions on charged side-chain amino groups.
