## Abstract Conformational studies were performed on the bicyclo [4.2.0] octane system of a series of related tetracyclic diterpenes, using molecular mechanics and ^1^H NMR. Both methods gave compatible results, but did not permit the deduction of any quantitative relationship linking the vicinal c

The six-membered ring of an anti-tricycle (~5.1.0.0.315] octane is shown by X-ray crystallography to be almost planar. The precise conformation agrees remarkably well with that obtained for the molecule in solution using lanthanide shift reagents.
