In investigating further the role of a sulfinyl sulfone (I) as an intermediate in the disproportion&ion of an aryl sulfinic acid (1,2) we have measured the rate of hydrolysis of Ia (eq. 1) in acetic acid-l% water as solvent. In the course of this work we have discovered that the rate
