โœฆ Synopsis

The configuration interaction mechanism proposed by Florida, Schcps and Rice is shown inadequate to explain either the nonvanishing antiresonance minimum in the Rydberg absorption spectrum of naphthalene or the absence of obsesvabk antiresonances in general. The results of a treatment based on relaxing the overly restrictive assumptions of the Bixon-Jortner model are presented, and it is suggested that the variation in coupling strengths of the sparse states to successive dense states (together with possible nonparallelness of transition moments) can suppress the usual antiresonance expected on the basis of the Bison-Jortner model.

Interference effects in the electronic spectrum of large polyetomic molecular systems are discussed. It is shown that there exist some specific features characteristic to molecular systems and absent in atoms -ttc line shqe of an inhomogeneously broadened resonance is dependent on light polarization
