## Abstract The collision‐induced decompositions of the [M – H]^−^ and [M + Li]^+^ ions of a few dinucleoside phenylphosphonates were studied using fast atom bombardment and linked scanning at constant __B/E__. Deprotonation takes place on the base or sugar moieties. The [M – H]^−^ ion decomposes m

✦ Synopsis
The collision-induced decomposition mass spectrum of protonated rn-nitrobenzyl alcohol (NBA) was studied. The various cluster ions fragment mainly by loss of neutral NBA. Nitro-to-nitrite isomerization followed by loss of 'NO is a favoured fragmentation pathway of the [MH]+ ion. Eliminations of *OH, H,O and HNO, are among the other common fragmentation routes. Alkali metal cationization also leads to prominent loss of 'NO. Accurate mass measurements and various linked scanning measurements were used to elucidate the fragmentation pathways.
