Dark brown Ba 7 Cu 3 H 17 and its deuteride are prepared by room temp. hydrogenation (deuteration) of a Ba 2 Cu alloy for 24 h at 1-10 bar H 2 (D 2 ) pressure and subsequent annealing at 370 β’ C and 160 bar H 2 (D 2 ). Structure determination by X-ray and neutron diffraction shows that the deuteride (trigonal, P31c, Z = 2) consists of Ba 2+ ions, distorted tetrahedral 18 electron [CuD 4 ] 3-anions, and D -anions. The three crystallographically independent D -anions are tetrahedrally coordinated to Ba 2+ . The hydride, which decomposes slowly at room temp. under 1 bar H 2 pressure has a hydrogen storage efficiency of 63 g/l (1.5 wt.%).
