Synthesis of Stable Bromo-Substituted Masked o-Benzoquinones and

Their Application to the Synthesis of Bicyclo[2.2.2]octenones.

-Oxidation of the brominated phenol (II) in the presence of dienophiles generates adducts (V) via a masked o-benzoquinone. Debromonation of the adducts gives the bicyclic ketones (VI) in a substantially higher yield than by the recently reported synthesis from the masked benzoquinone derived from (I) and the dienophiles (IV).
