Practical Route to D-Manno and D-Gluco Azasugars from C2-Symmetric Bis-Aziridines.

-Ring opening of the bis-aziridine (I) with oxygen nucleophiles such as (II) or water results in formation of the tetrasubstituted pyrrolidines (III) and (V) with D-gluco configuration and the piperidines (IV) and (VI) with D-manno configuration. Furthermore, nitrous deamination of the pyrrolidine (VII), previously prepared from (I), gives a mixture of the cyclic carbamate protected pyrrolidines ( VIII) and (IX) which is deprotected to the 2,5-imino-D-glucitol (X). -(MCCORT, I.; DUREAULT,
