## Abstract Intramolecular Cο£ΏO bond forming reactions of aryl 2‐bromobenzyl ketones lead to benzo[__b__]furans. The cyclizations can be catalyzed by 10β€…mol% of iron trichloride (of 98% or of 99.995% purity) or sub‐mol% quantities of copper(II) chloride (of 99.995% purity).

Controlled Synthesis of 2-and 3-Substituted Benzo[b]furans. -Depending on the conditions, C2-substituted benzofuran (IV) or C3-substituted isomer (V) is formed via the same intermediate (III). At temperatures above -30Β°C, 2-substituted benzofurans (VII) and (XI) are generated by intramolecular conde
