Controlled Synthesis of 2-and 3-Substituted Benzo[b]furans. -Depending on the conditions, C2-substituted benzofuran (IV) or C3-substituted isomer (V) is formed via the same intermediate (III). At temperatures above -30°C, 2-substituted benzofurans (VII) and (XI) are generated by intramolecular condensation accompanied by aryl migration.
