Ceric Ammonium Nitrate Promoted Free Radical Cyclization Reactions Leading to β-Lactams.

-Treatment of enamides (I) or (V) with cerium ammonium nitrate (CAN) generates α-carbamoyl radicals which undergo 4-exo-trig cyclization followed by methanol quenching to provide the functionalized β-lactams. This is the first example of the use of amides in CAN promoted radical generation. -(D'
