✦ Synopsis


Bismuth(II) Chalcogenometallates(III) Bi 2 M 4 X 8 , Compounds with Bi 4+ 2 Dumbbells (M: Al, Ga and X: S, Se).

-The four title compounds are synthesized from the binary chalcogenides M 2 X 3 (M: Al, Ga; X: S, Se), Bi 2 X 3 , and elemental Bi (evacuated quartz tube, 1220 K, 24 h). The isotypic compounds crystallize in a new tetragonal structure type, space group P4/nnc, Z = 2. The structure contains the hitherto unknown Bi 2 4+ cation having a Bi-Bi bond length of 314.2 pm. The electron localization function shows the covalent Bi-Bi bond, the lone electron pairs of the ψ-octahedrally coordinated Bi(II) cations, and the polar nature of the Bi-X bonds. All compounds are diamagnetic semiconductors with an optical band gap of 1.8-2.7 eV.
