✦ Synopsis
Series of Compositions Bi 2 (M' x M 1-x ) 4 O 9 (M', M: Al, Ga, Fe; 0 ≤ x 1) with Mullite--Type Crystal Structure: Synthesis, Characterization and 18 O/ 16 O Exchange Experiment. -Bi2(GaxAl1-x)4O9, Bi2(FexAl1-x)4O9, and Bi2(FexGa1-x)4O9 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) powders are prepared by dissolving the corresponding metal nitrate hydrates in glycerine, followed by gelation, calcination, and final heating at 800 °C for 24 h. The samples are characterized by powder XRD, IR spectroscopy, and 18 O/ 16 O isotope exchange experiments. All the compounds crystallize in the orthorhombic space group Pbam. The lattice parameters change linearly as a function of composition x. The oxygen tracer diffusion coefficients of Bi2Al4O9, Bi2Fe4O9, Bi2(Ga/Al)4O9, and Bi2Ga4O9 are estimated.
