Asymmetric Hetero-Diels-Alder Reactions Catalyzed by Chiral (Salen)Chromium(III) Complexes.

-The title reactions between (I) and a wide range of aldehydes require only 2 mol% of the catalyst and afford the pyranone derivatives (III) with good enantioselectivity. Among different derivatives of the chiral catalyst with different counterions the tetrafluoroborate gives the best results. Although enantioselectivity in excess of 90% was achieved only in one case, several of the other products could be recrystallized to enantiomeric purity. The simplicity of the experimental procedure and the ready accessibility of the catalyst renders this an attractive method for the preparation of enantioenriched dihydropyranone derivatives. -(SCHAUS, S.
