✦ Synopsis
The analytical possibilities of the chemiluminescence observed from some local anaesthetics on acidic permanganate treatment are investigated. Five drugs belonging to the p-aminobenzoate series gave significant emission and the reagent concentrations for their determination were optimized. The following detection limits were obtained: benzocaine, 30 ng ml-'; butacaine, 20 ng ml-'; butoform, 30 ng ml-'; procaine, 40 ng ml-' and tetracaine 3 ng ml-'. The application of the reaction to the analysis of some pharmaceutical preparations containing benzocaine and procaine was evaluated.

2'-(2-Diisopropylaminoethoxy)-butyrophenone (ketocaine) and l-butoxy-2-(2-diisopropylaminoethoxy)-benzene show a good anaesthetic effect on topical application. The synthesis of both of these compounds specifically labelled with 14C is described. The preparation o f ketocaine generally labelled with
An on-line automatic system has been developed for the determination of local anaesthetics in untreated blood plasma samples. It utilizes supported liquid membrane extraction for initial sample preparation, a solid phase column for phase switching, and a capillary gas chromatographic final analysis.
